The teenage years can be a tough time of life. Pivotal points in life like the teenage years are often emotionally taxing, and made more difficult by hormonal changes.

Teens can feel alone, unappreciated and misunderstood. Developing social skills and staying active can prevent depression. A good team sport like basketball can keep a teenager on the straight and narrow.

In basketball, there are clearly defined roles. Simply being relied upon has psychological benefits. Since he’s counted on, he’s an integral part of the team. Basketball players also play closely to one another. Being close together rather than spread out helps the players develop a sense of camaradery and cohesion. Football and hockey helmets can be somewhat dehumanizing but basketball players typically would only wear a basketball face mask as protection. The team’s basketball singlet and shorts provide a uniform that increases team morale and identity. Basketball teams are also fairly small, so become a close knit unit. Although there are star players, every one of them knows how much they owe to their teammates.

The intense and strenuous nature of basketball is very effective in giving self-confidence and alleviating depression. Basketball players are on the move all the time, unlike in some sports. They have to vie for position and try to set each other up whenever possible. This kind of sustained activity is known for promoting endorphin production. Basketball requires a high degree of physical fitness, which builds confidence. Just be sure to warm up first to prevent knee and wrist pain.

Basketball shares a number of things common with team sports in general. Simply having friends and being part of a group is very important for young people. Without others, it is all too easy to feel alone and fall prey to any number of undesirable emotions which can lead to depression. Team sports are also known to make players more empathetic while at the same time giving them a stronger motivation and drive. A decent coach will also be someone to aspire to.

While there’s no one method that can 100% cure or prevent depression, even simple things like proper nutrition and getting enough sleep can be crucial. Engaging in a team sport (any team sport, it doesn’t necessarily have to be basketball) is a good way of taking care of your body and mind.

To summarise:

  • Team sports can give a sense of purpose and belonging
  • Team sports raise endorphins and are fun
  • Being fit and exercising helps reduce the effects of hormonal changes
  • Proper nutrition and sleep are also very important.
