At some point in your life you realize how vital balance is. Having too much or too little of something is never healthy and can certainly cause issues amongst children. The same thing goes forĀ confidence in children and self esteem in kids. While lacking confidence in kids, this is obviously bad for a child but parents may not realize it can be bad going to the other extreme as well. High levels of self esteem can be compared to low levels of self esteem, they are equals. One may be wondering what can happen to a child who carries a high level of self esteem into adulthood? Let’s take a look!

Causes of Too Much Self Esteem

When it comes to the causes of instilling too much self esteem into your child, you may not even know you are doing so. Some of the causes include giving your child far too much praise such as for simple things that they really don’t need to be rewarded for. Being an overachiever occurs normally when parents push their children to hard. Whether it is with the grades they get at school or in sports, if they have too much of self esteem, they will always feel the need to be at the top. In general the causes of too high a level of self esteem comes from unearned high esteem, being overly concerned with ourselves as this is what our parents have taught us, and lastly, sometimes it could just be a child’s personality and how they are.

Outcomes of a Child with Too Much Self Esteem

A child who was raised with too much self esteem can end up full of themselves. Arrogance is something that accompanies someone thinking to highly of themselves. Being considered overbearing and over assertive may occur also. They do not know humility because regardless of what they do, they don’t feel that they do much of anything wrong in order to even be humiliated. This will overall impact how others deal with them, and how they make decisions and see themselves. Relationships may be difficult because others may not want to be around such a person.

So you can see that too high of self esteem can be just as damaging as a child without or lacking self esteem. The key is finding just the right balance which is considered to be healthy self esteem.
